Welcome

Hi, my name is John Sanburg. Counsellor at Coastal Pathways.

If you're going through a difficult season in life, know that you don't have to face it alone. Whether you're struggling with bereavement, depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, poor self-esteem or major life changes, counselling can provide the support and guidance you need to navigate these challenges. It's okay to feel overwhelmed, but reaching out for help can bring relief and hope. Together, we can work through your pain, build resilience, and find ways to move forward at your own pace. Taking that first step toward counselling is a powerful choice for healing. I'm here to listen, support, and help you through this tough time with compassion and care.

I believe that challenges can be harnessed for our personal growth. Reflecting on how you've overcome tough seasons in the past can reveal strengths you may not realize you possess. My approach is centered on helping you thrive through resilience and continuous development.

Are you struggling with ....

Depression

Depression can feel like a heavy weight that makes even the simplest tasks feel overwhelming. It's important to remember that you’re not alone in feeling this way, even though it might sometimes seem isolating. Depression doesn’t define you - it’s just one part of the human experience, and it’s ok to have days when it’s hard to see the light. You are worthy of compassion, both from others and from yourself. Healing takes time, sometimes its a matter of taking things one small step at a time, reaching out for support when you need it. There’s hope, even on the darkest days.

Grief

Grief is a deeply personal journey, and it’s different for everyone. In times of grief, it's normal to feel a mix of emotions - sadness, anger, confusion, numbness, guilt. It's important to be gentle with yourself, allowing space for these feelings without judgment. Even though it may feel overwhelming, know that healing comes in its own time, and it’s helpful to lean on others when you need support. Your grief reflects the depth of your love, and in time, that love will find new ways to live on in your heart. You are not alone in this journey, and it’s ok to seek help, even when it feels hard to see.

Trauma

Trauma can leave deep, invisible scars that affect how we see the world and ourselves. If you’ve experienced trauma, you may feel shaken, confused, or even disconnected from the world around you. These are normal responses to something deeply painful, and they don’t make you weak or broken. Be kind and patient with yourself as you navigate the aftermath, knowing that it’s okay to seek help when you need it. Trauma may always be a part of your story, but it doesn’t have to define you. Reclaim your peace, one step at a time.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a natural response to stress, but when it becomes overwhelming, it can feel all-consuming. It might show up as constant worry, racing thoughts, or a sense of impending danger, even when there's no immediate threat. This can leave you feeling exhausted, isolated, or unsure of how to cope. Anxiety is not a sign of weakness, and you're not alone in experiencing it. Through understanding and support, we can work together to help you regain a sense of control, reduce the intensity of those anxious feelings, and develop healthier ways to navigate life’s uncertainties. Healing from anxiety is a journey, and you're taking the first step by reaching out.

Terminal Illness

A diagnosis of a terminal illness is considered a profound trauma that shakes the foundation of our sense of safety and future. The emotional and psychological impact can be overwhelming, affecting not only how we see ourselves but also how we relate to the world around us. Managing this trauma can vary, depending on our coping strategies, past experiences with loss and trauma. Our overall well-being (physical, emotional, social and spiritual) plays a significant role in processing and navigating these challenging moments. Together, we can explore ways of reframing the season and find moments of peace in the face of uncertainty.

Rejection

Rejection can stir up feelings of hurt, doubt, and loneliness. You may wonder if you're not enough or if there's something wrong with you. It doesn’t define your worth and is not a measure of your value as a person. Be gentle with yourself in these moments, and allow yourself the space to process the emotions that come with it. With support and self-compassion, you can heal from these experiences and begin to rebuild your confidence and self-esteem. Together, we can explore how to navigate these challenges, understand the emotions they bring, and help you move forward with greater resilience and a stronger sense of self.
